What it’s all about
The 2011 OHBA Humanitarian Build and Conference has the main goal of building 6 houses for needy families living in a very poor barrios (called Aguas Negras) around the Puerto Plata area. There will be a non-traditional conference with other activities planned such as fishing and excursions as well as some business sessions. There will be a President’s Gala, however it might resemble more of a beach party than a black tie evening. For more information, have a look at our
program.
Why Puerto Plata?
Following the January 12, 2010 earthquake in Haiti, OHBA President James Bazely was moved to challenge the membership to assist the people of Haiti rebuild their country. As the proverbial dust settled, James realized that financial aid was a more realistic (and safer) means of helping those devastated by the earthquake in Haiti, but he still had a vision of taking on a different type of conference and helping the people in the Puerto Plata area who are truly in need.
How are we going to do this?
A plane-load of OHBA members and their families will depart from Pearson International Airport and fly direct to Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Once there, those who want to participate on the build project will be divided into teams of 15 people per work crew. These teams will be taken by the Hero Holiday staff to the work site and will complete the project in 4 – days. The crews will work in shifts during the cooler hours of the day and will still have plenty of time to enjoy the resort with family and friends.
